A recent teaser of the movie sparked excitement among his fans, who have long been eager to see him reprise a romantic role. He believes that no one can portray romance on screen better than Shah Rukh Khan.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Madhavan opened up about the fading presence of love stories in mainstream Hindi films. He pointed out how today’s cinematic landscape is largely dominated by action and thriller genres, leaving little space for heartfelt romances — especially those featuring older protagonists.

Madhavan about lack of romantic stories
Madhavan shed light on how the genre has struggled to find a foothold even in the streaming space. “I know the Korean [dramas] work, but I don’t recall seeing any hardcore Indian romantic film — let alone one that is age-appropriate for a 55-year-old. And I think they’re the most romantic people in the world, because this generation — my generation — knows how much importance to give our partners, because we’ve lived through so much.”
The 'Alai Payuthey' actor highlighted that despite the audience’s interest in romantic stories, there is a shortage of writers capable of creating meaningful narratives within the genre. Citing the Hollywood film 'As Good As It Gets' as an example, he emphasised the untapped potential of such films and expressed admiration for its memorable dialogues.
Madhavan's remark about Shah Rukh Khan
Madhavan argued that the issue lies in storytelling, not profitability. “Don’t blame the money. Get us a story, no? One that is well-researched. No one does romance like Shah Rukh [Khan], but one needs a heroine of his age as well — and that’s getting difficult to find,” he said.
'Aap Jaisa Koi' features Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh in a beautiful romantic story. Directed by Vivek Soni and backed by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, it will premiere on OTT.
