Birthplace of winners: watch out for next year’s Oscar nominations

Cannes, due to its credibility, has become the birthplace for films that go on to receive wide acclaim and major nominations as well as awards. This year’s festival is said to be no different, as it is said that Cannes brings out winners.You should watch out for this year's winners at Cannes, as it is predicted that they will also win big with Oscar nominations. ‘Anora,’ for example, had previously won the Palme d'Or award at Cannes (the most important award given at Cannes to the director). It then went forth and won big at the Oscars for the Best Picture award.

This year, actor Robert De Niro will also be in attendance at the film festival, as he is all set to be awarded with an honorary Palme d'Or award.

Films on Gaza and the Palestinian struggle

The much-anticipated documentary film ‘Put Your Soul On Your Hand And Walk’ is all set for premiering at the film festival. The film is about the life and work of the Palestinian war photojournalist Fatima Hassouna. Only a day after the festival’s lineup announcement and the film’s premiere announcement at the parallel ACID festival, Hassouna and 10 of her relatives were killed during an Israeli bombing, as per France 24.The interest around this film increased tenfold after the incident and due to public outrage as well. The much-anticipated documentary is directed by Iranian director Sepideh Farsi, who, in a statement to AFP, shared that she had believed that the war would’ve ended and Hassouna would’ve attended the event. She shared that "(Fatima Hassouna) would survive, that she would come (to Cannes), and that the war would stop. But reality caught up with us."

Actors turned directors attend big at this year’s Cannes

Another major event to look out for this year is how many Hollywood stars who have accomplished a lot in the realm of acting have now entered the domain of directing films. One such celeb that you should be on the lookout for this year is Scarlett Johansson. Well known for her roles in the ‘Avenger’ films as Black Widow, the actress officially entered the behind-the-camera scene with her directorial debut, ‘Eleanor the Great.’‘Charlie’s Angels’ star Kristen Stewart will also attend the film festival with her next directorial project titled ‘The Chronology of Water.’ The film is said to loosely be adapted from writer Lidia Yuknavitch's memoir.Other than this, more stars join the Cannes Film Festival with their directorial projects, including actor Harris Dickinson with his film ‘Urchin,’ which shares a tale of a man from London who’s lived a rough life and how he plans to turn everything around.

Influx of documentaries

This year at the Cannes Film Festival, a multitude of documentaries will also be featured that the public should be keeping an eye out for. One such documentary about U2 frontman Bono is also set to premiere at the film festival, titled ‘Bono: Stories of Surrender.’ Another addition is a documentary about George Orwell created by Raoul Peck and ‘The Six-Billion-Dollar Man’ about Julian Assange, the founder and creator of WikiLeaks.
